In the Fall of 2016, I found myself baffled by my husband as he grew increasingly frustrated and tired. I wanted to heal him but didn’t know what to do. On the cusp of his fifth season in the NBA, Meyers was struggling to sleep, recover from training, and sustain any sort of energy. These symptoms weren’t just affecting him on the court. They were coming home too. Day after day, I kept seeing my 7’1” man standing far from tall.
That November, I connected Meyers with Dr. Philip Goglia, an elite nutritionist from Los Angeles. I’ll never forget our first phone call with him. With a look at Meyers' blood work, he quickly identified the cause of his energy and recovery issues. Meyers’ inflammatory markers were through the roof, and the foods he was eating were accentuating the problem. Immediately, Dr. Goglia put together a plan. Little did we know, these dietary changes would change our lives.
Two weeks later, Meyers walked into the kitchen looking substantially leaner. I worried that he was losing weight that he needed as an NBA center. To our surprise, he hopped on the scale and his weight was the same. His leaner figure was the result of less inflammation, not a loss of muscle. For the first time in what felt like forever, I saw a light at the end of the tunnel. And who would have thought it was as simple as eating the right foods?
Fast forward two years. Our lives, relationships, and his career were at a whole new level. Our heavy fog had lifted. But there was still one problem. During the chaotic basketball season, sticking to Meyers’ diet plan was proving difficult. Limited snack options at the gym and on the road left Meyers resorting back to foods that weren’t approved in his new diet. Knowing how far we had come, there was no way I would let us go back. So, I started presenting him with new bar options. You would think that in a category with an overwhelming number of choices, there would have been one option that met both his standards and mine. And yet, option after option fell short. So on January 6th, 2018, I decided to take matters into my own hands and got into the kitchen myself. One batch of bars became two, and two batches quickly turned to ten. Before I knew it, I couldn’t keep up with the demand.
We had something.
And, we needed to share it.
